Members feeling proud of their NO GAIN MEETING
When we went to SRD 2011 in June, Nancy Marasco, our Regional Director, spoke about our Road To Success. She stated that we should recognize members each week for their successes. She said it's sometimes harder for a member to lose weight than it is for a 7-foot tall basketball player to slam dunk a ball into the basket and that we manage to all cheer for the basketball player, why don’t we cheer as loud for our members when they have worked so hard to have a successful week? When we got back to the chapter and roll call was given we all gave a big cheer and clapped loudly for each member as they reported a loss. Every week we continued cheering for weight losses and our members really started to sit up and take notice. We began recording better losses. On June 23, 2011 we had 13 members report in with a total loss of 17.25 pounds and NO GAINS. Even our 5 KOPS reported a loss. We have never had a complete no gainer. IT WAS GREAT. We were all very excited over our accomplishment.

OH. The people you meet at SRD!!

This is Keith Benson. While serving as leader of CA0011, Long Beach he took Barb Cady's pink hair challenge" lead and challenged his members to lose 50 pounds. If anyone met this challenge, the chapter could dye his hair. Well, as it turned out, Jan Wilcox lost 52 pounds. The chapter got creative and dyed his hair...green, yellow, pink, purple, blue...Kudos to Keith!!
Congratulations to Jan. Job well done!!
I wonder if the current leader, Keith's wife Ruth, will challenge the chapter this year!!!

Joycephoto Area Captain, and leader of Tops WA0538, Opportunity, Joyce Anderson accepts, for the chapter, the American Flag presented by
Wayne Duckworth upon his return from duty. The flag came with a certificate to the chapter for their outstanding support of US deployed
forces fighting the Global War on Terrorism. This flag was flown on an American C-17 over the skies of Afghanistan on New Years Day 2011.

Wayne and his wife Diana joined the chapter in April of 2010. Since joining Wayne has lost 25.5 pounds and Diana has lost 48.5 pounds.

Wayne is a 23 year veteran with the 446th Airlift Wing and he along with 25 other Reservists from Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA
returned on Feb 4th after a four month mobilization as ground crew in support of Operations Enduring Freedom and New Dawn from
Europe to Southwest Asia. He and his crew mates loaded Air Force C-17 Globemasters, like the ones based at McChord,
C-130 Hercules, and also filled the bellies of Russian jets.

Altogether, they sent 42,000 tons of cargo totaling $1.4Billion in vital life-saving equipment. Part of the cargo includes 1400 MRAP
(Mine Resistant Ambush Protected) Vehicles, which were sent directly to soldiers saving lives.

What a better place to recruit and spread the word about TOPS than at a Fitness Center? Area Captain, and KOPS Pam Harper brought a display
explaining what TOPS is about. Also exhibited was the food exchange system. Pam displayed her before and after picture as a
testimony of what TOPS can do as long you have the motivation, willpower and motivation to Take Off Pounds Sensibly. (photo on left)

TOPS CA 936, Clearlake Oaks
Meets at the Moose Lodge in Clearlake Oaks, CA

I had a great time visiting this chapter. I met a bunch of wonderful ladies who
chatted or played cards before the meeting. They offered me fruit which
members bring in to share with one another. The meeting consisted of the
minutes being read, playing games such as bingo, awarding contest winners
and roll call. Some of the members shared sentimental items from their past.
It was very entertaining. Elaine Thomas read an inspirational story from the
Tops News for the program. All in all, it was a very good meeting.
I hope to attend a few more times while I'm in CA. -Deb

Disc Golfing
submitted by KOPS Barbara Pendelton

Our chapter includes exercise as a part of our meeting every week. Linda and I did Disc Golfing when we took part in our Senior Games. It was a lot of fun and we brought it back to our chapter and taught everyone how to play.
It is easy to learn and fun.
You need at least one disc and all sporting good places carry them as well as Fred Meyers. You walk around a course and instead of a club and ball as in regular golf you toss your disc. The aim is to reach a basket and toss your disc into it. The course is uphill, downhill and through wooded areas so you get a lot of walking in as well as ending to pick up your disc for the next throw. Each hole has a par, but when we’re exercising we first have fun and don’t worry about the score, most of the time we are over par anyway.
It is fun to get outdoors and doing something different for exercise.

4 chapters from Central Northern Utah TOPS participated
in the Roy City Parade on August 7th!

It was fun being with TOPS friends, as it always is!! We marched along beside an adorable 1929 car with bright TOPS posters on both sides. We shouted TOPS songs as we marched along. The "AAOOGGAA" horn of the car added to the fun all along the way. We passed out hundreds of TOPS pamphlets, getting the TOPS word out there! Plus an added bonus is that we all certainly got our exercise PLUS that day!!
It was great fun!! Give it a try in your area!!

At Spring workshop WA 642 Fed Way put out a challenge to all other chapters. The contest was simple. The chapter who lost the most percentage of weight in a 6 week period won. The losing chapter had to put on a lunch for the winners. WA 12, Kent took our challenge. We were close for a couple of weeks but then the Kent chapter had members go on vacations and WA 642 took the lead and did not look back. In the end, WA642 lost 51.2 pounds to WA 12, 6 pounds. You gotta give the Kent chapter credit, they have 7 KOPS so they don't have a lot to lose. The Kent chapter put on a really great and healthy potluck and we all got to meet each other and swap club stories. So now the question is... Does any one else want to challenge WA 642 Federal Way to a weight loss competition??
Story submitted by Janice (Both chapters are pictured here)

TOPS WA 0292, Snohomish recently completed an 8 week Octopus Challenge. Each member who wished to participate received an Octopus created by Area Captain Darlene Wascher. Then, each week, for 8 weeks, the challenge was to keep all 8 legs of the Octopus. If a member had a gain, or was absent, a leg had to be removed. At the end of the 8 weeks, each member was given tickets -- one ticket for each leg remaining -- to be placed in a drawing for nice prizes. Two names were drawn -- Margaret Martin and Thelma Niemi were the lucky winners. Pictured are the members who participated with their Octopus. (Octopi??)

What was the occasion: Program Field Trip
When did it take place: 2/11/2010
Where was it held: Silverdale, WA
Who is pictured: KOPS Linda Zahnow

Our leader, Dana Suttell, gave a program on style and clothing. She talked about how we need to change our thinking about our choices in regard to color and style as our bodies change in the same way we are changing our eating habits. We need to think outside the box. The following week we made a field trip to a new Goodwill store where we tried on things we normally would not have thought of doing.

The picture shows Linda Zahnow in just one of the wonderful items we found. Linda was not sure about the purchase at first but I hope you agree as we all did that it was a good fit for her. Linda intends to wear it next year at SRD when she receives her 10 year KOPS award. We all learned much by following the program with the shopping trip.

This turned out to be a wonderful program idea.

We have a fun way to honor your officers with their annual charms. We used earring findings with multiple loops (they come in many shapes and sizes). We used a special pin in the top loop to attach it to our shirts. Our chapter uses a sailboat on our shirts so we attached the charm but any charm can be used there. We are a new chapter and placed a numeral bead with the officers charm. We plan to use a numeral for each year. There are many ways to use this idea. Attach KOPS charms and numerals. Award a charm for each 10-25 pounds, anything will work. It's a fun way to display our charms and awards.
